Sicily, the Mediterranean’s largest island
The Atrium of the Fishing Cupids in the Villa Romana del Casale. It is semicircular, with a four column portico, the first room of the larger private apartment of the villa. In the centre of the atrium is a small, shallow pool. There are remains of a fountain in the middle of the pool. The mosaic in the portico depicts cupids aboard six boats fishing in the abundant sea, teeming with life, employing a number of different fishing techniques.
