Herculaneum

Street in Herculaneum

A street in the old Roman town of Herculaneum with the houses of modern Ercolano behind it. Herculaneum was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 63 CE and completely buried by a torrent of volcanic mud during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE.
