Pompeii

Cupids and Psyches

Detail of a frieze in a room in the famous House of the Vettii, one of the most luxurious residences in Pompeii. The frieze, running around the room approximately one metre from the floor, depicts Cupids and their female counterparts, Psyches, carrying out a range of human activities: in this case cloth preparation. This was probably a dining-room, or at least a room in which people sat, for the pictures are at a height that they can best be enjoyed by sitting.
