Lazio, the Latin heartland
The view across the gardens from the balustraded balcony of Villa d'Este, a fine example of Renaissance architecture and the Italian Renaissance garden. It was commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este, grandson of Pope Alexander VI after he had been appointed Governor of Tivoli by Pope Julius III, with the gift of the existing villa.
