The spectacular Amalfi Coast
The Piazza Duomo with the Duomo Sant’Andrea in Amalfi, dating back to the 11th century. An independent republic from the 7th century until 1075, Amalfi extracted itself from Byzantine vassalage and first elected a duke in 958; it rivalled Pisa and Genoa in its domestic prosperity and maritime importance before the rise of Venice. It is now a small coastal resort on the beautiful Amalfi coast, about 35 kilometres southeast of Naples.
