Lalibela and its rock-hewn churches

Bete Giyorgis church

Probably the most spectacular of Lalibela's 11 monolithic churches, according to legend hewn out of the living earth by angels in a single night, is the Bete Giyorgis (St. George) church, in the shape of a cross. The church complex is over 600 years old.
