Ogaden National Liberation Front

Ogaden National Liberation Front

The Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), a separatist group fighting to make the Ogaden region in eastern Ethiopia an independent state, was founded in 1984. It claims Ethiopia is an occupying force as mostly ethnic Somalis inhabit the area. On 12 August 2018, the ONLF declared a unilateral ceasefire. Its flag is a tricolour of green, blue and red stripes; the colours represent the fertility and richness of the land, the dignity and integrity of the people and the continuity of the struggle for self-determination and freedom. The white star on the central stripe represents the commitment and unity of the people.
