Colony of Abyssinia, 1936
The Italian flag was modelled on that of revolutionary France (blue-white-red) at the end of the 18th Century, with green substituted for blue. The tricolour was officially adopted for the Kingdom of Sardinia with the arms of Savoy in its centre, the basis of the flag of a united Italy, and its colonies, including Abyssinia, when it was invaded and occupied from 1936 to 1941.
