Paphos, the south-west of Cyprus

Pyramos and Thisbe Mosaic

A mosaic floor panel in the central court or atrium of the Greco-Roman House of Dionysos, a wealthy villa in Kato Paphos Archaeological Park. It represents the mythological love story of Pyramus and Thisbe. On the left is Thisbe and on the right, instead of Thisbe’s lover, there is a portrait of the river-god Pyramus. In the background is a tiger holding Thisbe’s bloodied veil in his mouth. The villa was built at the end of the 2nd century CE. It was destroyed and abandoned after the earthquakes of the 4th century CE.
