Gazimağusa (Famagusta), a walled city on the east coast

View of Varosha

Nadir Sokak (street), near Arkın Palm Beach Hotel, with the ruined buildings of Varosha (Maraş), the abandoned southern quarter of the Cypriot city of Famagusta. Before the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, it was the new tourist area of the town. Its inhabitants fled when it came under Turkish control, and it has remained abandoned and under the occupation of the Turkish Armed Forces ever since. It continues to be uninhabited and is described as a ghost town. Entry is forbidden to the public.
