Gazimağusa (Famagusta), a walled city on the east coast
Othello Castle (Othello’s Tower), built by the Lusignans in 1310 to protect the port against possible enemy attacks. It was also used as the main entrance to Famagusta. The castle was modified by the Venetians in 1492, who named it after a Venetian governor Lieutenant Christophoro Moro in 1506, replacing the square towers with round ones. A relief of the Lion of St Mark was engraved above the castle’s main entrance. It is said to have been the home of Moro, who was the inspiration of Shakespeare’s Othello.
