Lefkoşa, the Turkish part of Nicosia
The Büyük Han (Big Inn), now a restaurant, one of the most important architectural works of the Ottoman period in Cyprus. It is in the traditional market centre of Nicosia, was commissioned by governor-general Muzaffer Paşa and built in 1572, two years after the city fell to the Ottomans. It was created to provide accommodation for travellers from Anatolia and other parts of Cyprus and named initially “Alanyalilar Han”. An Ottoman Masjid (mosque) stands on marble piers with a fountain for ablutions beneath it.
