Larnaca, on the south-east coast of Cyprus
The Kamares Aqueduct, sanctioned in 1746 by Ottoman governor Abu Bekir Pasha, and built in classical Roman style – some historians believe it is a Roman creation that was simply refurbished by the Ottomans – it was constructed to solve Larnaka’s freshwater problems. It originally ferried water from a source 10km south and remained in use until the 1950s. This section is along the south-east exit road A5. and the best preserved; ‘Kamares’ means ‘arches’.
