Richard I of England, late 12th century

Richard I of England, late 12th century

King Richard I, nicknamed Lionheart, captured the island of Cyprus during the Third Crusade, in 1191; he sold it a year later to the Knights Templar, a Catholic military order founded in 1119 and among the most skilled fighting units of the Crusades. His banner displayed three lions on a red background; a feature retained throughout history in English heraldry.
