Santiago de Cuba, the second-largest Cuban city

Abel Santamaría monument, Santiago

The giant Cubist fountain engraved with the face of José Martí and the slogan “To die for the Fatherland is to live”, from the National Anthem. It is the Monumento Abel Santamaría, dedicated to Abel Santamaría Cuadrado (1927 – 1953), whose face is on the other side, a leader in the Cuban Revolutionary movement; he was tortured and murdered by police after the failed uprising on 26 July 1953.
