On 18 January 1947 the People’s Republic of Croatia adopted its constitution and, that same year, an official Coat of Arms. It displays the traditional Croatian checkerboard shield with a background of a rising sun over the sea. At the bottom is an anvil, symbolising industry. The emblem is framed by ears of wheat, symbolising agriculture, and surmounted by the gold-bordered red star of communism. In 1963 the republic’s name was changed to the Socialist Republic of Croatia, but the arms remained unchanged.
