Aboriginal culture on the Tiwi Islands

Next

The Tiwi people have been under the influence of the Catholic Church since the arrival of the missionaries in 1911, but have kept many aspects of their traditional culture, especially their art and crafts and clan dances. At Easter the children of both Primary and Senior schools come together and perform the Stations of the Cross, depicting Jesus carrying the cross and his crucifixion, in the Tiwi way; clan dances are an important part of the performance.
