Aboriginal Initiation Ceremonies from Northern Australia

Next

Young men, decorated with cotton wool stuck to their bodies in patterns associated with their “Dreamings” march onto the ceremonial “Jamangki” ground where they later will dance in the all-night “Marndiwala” initiation ceremony for a group of young boys who will be circumcised the following morning. After this, men, wearing headdresses made from paper bark, dance towards the initiates who lie down, looked after by their mentors.
