The Tiwi Islands - Melville Island

Tiwi burial site

A Tiwi burial site on Melville Island, with the Pukumani funerary poles over the graves. Carved and painted “Pukumani poles” left during the burial of a Mungatopi elder are typical of the people living on the Tiwi islands. Personal effects of the deceased are also left behind. This site is in Karslake, near Milikapiti (Snake Bay), on Melville Island.
