Korça, Eastern Albania’s main city
The single domed Xhamia e Mirahorit (Mirahori Mosque), the most ancient building in Korça and one of the most architecturally significant mosques in Albania. It was built in 1494 on the foundations of an existing church and named after Koja Mirahor İljaz Bej, a Muslim convert active in the 1453 Ottoman siege of Constantinople and the city-founder of Korça. The mosque became operational again in January 1991, after the collapse of the communist dictatorship and the minaret, destroyed by an earthquake in 1960, was rebuilt in 2014.
