Islamic Republic of Afghanistan 2004

Islamic Republic of Afghanistan 2004

Afghanistan convened a Constitutional Loya Jirga (Council of Elders) in 2003 and a new constitution was ratified in January 2004. Following an election in October 2004, Hamid Karzai won and became the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The flag was changed to a ratio of 2:3, and on the scroll “Islamic State of Afghanistan” replaced with simply “Afghanistan” as in 1930. Although the Taliban seized power again in 2021, no country has formally recognised it; at the United Nations Headquarters this flag still flies.
