Winner of South Australia's Ecotourism awards for 2005 and again in 2006 and the Sustainable Tourism award in 2006, Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary is home to some of Australia's most spectacular arid mountain landscapes and South Australia's premier ecotourism destination.

Located in the heart of the ruggedly spectacular northern Flinders Ranges 600 km north of Adelaide, Arkaroola is a 6102 sq km privately owned wilderness sanctuary offering guests ease of access to many sheltered waterholes, deep plunging gorges, and breathtaking mountaintop views of vast desert plains and distant salt lakes.

From a comfortable base, including airconditioned motel lodges, caravan park and bush camping grounds, visitors need only travel short distances to experience the profound silences of outback Australia, or observe native wildlife in their natural habitat. A wide range of Advanced Ecotourism accredited tours are available, including the world-famous Ridgetop Tour, the ultimate adventure 4WD experience, Astronomical Tours of the magnificent Southern Hemisphere skies, and guided nature drive / walks.

Three professionally equipped observatories, and some of the best astronomical seeing conditions in Australia, tours of the universe offer views not usually available to the public. Our astronomical equipment includes two 360mm Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes, Star Chairs fitted with powerful astro binoculars, all being available for hire to the public.
