Shakhrisabz, the birthplace of Timur

Amir Timur er osti dahmasi

Entrance to the crypt of Timur, built 1380-1404, in the Khazrati-Imam complex; it was intended for Timur, but, when Timur died in 1405 on campaign to China, the passes to Shakhrisabz were snowed in, so he was buried in the Gur-e-Amir mausoleum in Samarkand instead. Two unidentified corpses are buried here; it was discovered in 1943, when a child playing football fell through the ground.
