Amir Timur, Gur-e-Amir

A modern portrait of Amir Timur or Tamerlane (9 April 1336—18 February 1405), the outstanding commander and statesman of the 14th century, who envisioned the restoration of the Mongol Empire of Genghis Khan and managed to found a centralised united state composing of 27 countries from the Mediterranean Sea to India. To legitimise his conquests, Timur relied on Islamic symbols and language, referring to himself as the “Sword of Islam”. it is estimated that his campaigns caused the deaths of 17 million people.
