An iNtfwasa graduation Ceremony in 1972 - Day 2

Doing

Newly qualified “tangoma” or diviners perform a “kufemba” (smelling out) ritual, held on a leash by senior tangoma. They are fitted out with an “umfembi”, that contains ritual objects, among others the nose of a hyena, an animal with a keen sense of smell; this helps them to “smell out” evil spirit bodies that may reside in a person's body. They carry a “sizinga”, a special brush with which they brush the person and then smell it; when they find it they “sneeze” the spirit body out.
