The uMhlanga or Reed Dance

Two girls posing

Two Swazi girls pose at the end of the annual “uMhlanga” or Reed Dance ceremony in Lobamba. They carry small dancing shields and torches, as a reminder they cut those reeds at night. The knife, apart from being the tool with which they cut reeds, is also a symbol of their virginity.
