Paramaribo, Suriname's Capital

Maarten Luther Church, Paramaribo

The Maarten Luther Kerk, opposite the Central Market, the oldest Lutheran church in Paramaribo. Inaugurated in 1834, it was designed by architect Charles Antione Roman to replace an older wooden bulding constructed on the same spot in 1747 and razed by the fire of 1831. It is made almost entirely from brick and stone and the white-plastered façade with arched black window frames is slightly reminiscent of Cape Dutch style from South Africa. Most features, including the interior, have remained unchanged.
