Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's Capital

Gates to Winter Palace

The elaborate Open Gate, flanked by two smaller ones and behind it the Peace Gate to the Winter Palace compound of the Bogd Khan in the south of Ulaanbaatar. The compound was built between 1893 and 1903. The palace is the only one left from originally four residences of the eighth Jebtsundamba Khutughtu, who was enthroned as the Great Khaan (Emperor) of Mongolia on 29 December 1911, when Outer Mongolia declared independence from China.
