Performing a “Long Song”

Performance of a “Long Song” (Urtyn duu) by the Tumen Ekh Song and Dance Ensemble at the State Youth and Children's Theatre in Ulaanbaatar. This genre is called “Long song” because each syllable of text is extended for a long duration. The main feature of the long song is the prolonged, tenuto notes with deeply modulated vibrato on the vowels and the singer is accompanied by a man playing the Morin khuur (horse-head fiddle).
