Buddhist Monasteries

Gandan Khiid

Gandantegchinlen (Gandan) Monastery was established in 1835 by the Fifth Jebtsundamba, then Mongolia's highest reincarnated lama. It became the principal centre of Buddhist learning in Mongolia. The Tibetan name translates to the “Great Place of Complete Joy”. The Tibetan style temple of Boddhisattva Avalokiteshvara is the principal building. It currently has over 600 monks in residence.
