Choibalsan statue

The statue of Khorloogiin Choibalsan stands in front of the provincial museum. Choibalsan (8 February, 1895 - 26 January, 1952) was the leader of the Mongolian People's Republic from the 1930s until his death. He was a close follower of Stalin and emulated his policies in many ways. Many purges of “enemies of the people” like religious figures, the former aristocracy, and political dissidents were conducted: 30,000-35,000 people, mostly lamas, were killed from 1921–41, most of them in late 1930s.
