Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, 1995

On 23 December 1994 Gagauzia became an “Autonomous Territorial Unit” within Moldova, encompassing 23 communes and three towns with a mainly ethnic Gagauz population in four small territories, called Gagauz Yeri, in the south of the country. On 31 October 1995 a flag was adopted of blue-white-red, with three yellow stars (representing the three largest parts of Gagauzia) in the upper blue stripe, 3/5 of the flag's width.
