Hwaeomsa Temple, South Jeolla Province

Four Lion Pagoda

The four lion pagoda, one of the four stone pagodas of Hwaeomsa, probably erected in the 9th century during the Unified Silla period, although its exact origins and purpose are unknown. The pagoda has a two story platform and a single body with relief carvings of the Four Heavenly Kings. Four lion sculptures make up the upper tier of the platform, giving it its name.
