Eternal Rome, Italy’s capital

Turtle Fountain

The Fontana delle Tartarughe on Piazza Mattei, a square in the Sant’Angelo district of Rome, was designed by Giacomo della Porta and sculpted by Taddeo Landini between 1580 and 1588. The focus of the fountain is four bronze boys, each grasping a dolphin spouting water into a marble shell. The turtles, held in the boys' hands drinking from the upper basin, were added, probably by Bernini, in 1658 or 1659 when the fountain was restored.
