Herculaneum

View over Herculaneum

The restored old Roman town of Herculaneum, buried in 79 CE during the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, seen in the background. Since around the year 1000, the area developed into a town, Resina and only in 1709 it was found that the ancient Roman city was buried underneath. Since then Herculaneum has been partially excavated: it is certain there is much more underneath the town, seen in the background. In 1969, Resina changed its name to Ercolano in honour of the ancient city.
