Herculaneum

Triton, Terme del Foro

Triton, a mythological Greek god, the messenger of the big sea; he is the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, god and goddess of the sea and is represented as a “merman”, with the upper body of a human and the tail of a fish. He is depicted, surrounded by sea creatures, on the mosaic floor in the Terme del Foro, the central public bath in the old Roman town of Herculaneum.
