Duomo, the Cathedral

A wide angle view of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, better known as the Duomo. Work on the cathedral took 170 years, with the first stone laid on 8 September 1296 under the direction of Arnolfo di Cambio from Siena. The first stone of the 84m high Campanile, the bell tower, designed by Giotto di Bondone, was laid on 19 July 1334 and the structure was not completed until 1359.
