Santiago de Cuba, the second-largest Cuban city

Loma de San Juan, Santiago de Cuba

Loma de San Juan, where, 1 July 1898, the Spanish-Cuban-American War’s only land battle took place. Spanish rule came to an end, but Cuba became an American colony under a pseudo-republican government. Calixto Garcia, the major general of the Mambi troops (guerrilla Cuban independence soldiers), that had played a decisive role in the victory, was not allowed at the signing of the peace treaty between the Spanish and Americans, making it seem the Cubans had played no role in it!
