Santiago de Cuba, the second-largest Cuban city

A replica of the Spanish fort on Loma de San Juan, the spot of the Spanish-Cuban-American War’s only land battle, on 1 July 1898, which ended Spanish rule but turned Cuba into a US colony. Here, the peace treaty was signed between the Spanish and Americans, making it seem as if the war was won thanks to their involvement. The major general of the Mambi troops, Calixto Garcia, was not allowed to participate, despite the fact that it was his troops, the guerrilla Cuban independence soldiers, that had played a decisive role in the victory.
