La Habana (Havana), the Cuban capital

Hotel Habana Libre

The Hotel Tryp Habana Libre, one of the larger hotels in Cuba, with 572 rooms in a 25 floor tower at Calle 23 (“La Rampa”) and Calle L. The hotel was built as the Habana Hilton under the personal auspices of President Fulgencio Batista. It opened on 22 March 1958 but following Fidel Castro's entry into Havana on 8 January 1959, the hotel became his headquarters for three months. In October 1960 all American hotels were nationalised, casinos closed and it was renamed Hotel Habana Libre (Hotel Free Havana).
