Habana Vieja, Old Havana

Palacio de los Capitanes Generales

The Palacio de los Capitanes Generales Casa de gobierno, the former official residence of the governors of Havana, on the eastern side of the Plaza de Armas in Old Havana, now the Museum of the City of Havana. Construction, by slaves, started in 1776, with bricks from Málaga, wrought-iron grilles from Bilbao and marble from Genoa and was completed in 1792. After independence it was used by US military governors from 1899 until 1902 and then as the presidential palace of the Cuban Republic until 1920.
