Statue of Francisco Aguilera, Bayamo

Statue of Francisco Vicente Aguilera (1821 - 1877), a Cuban patriot born in Bayamo. In 1867 he was the richest landowner in the eastern region of Cuba; In 1851 he conspired against the Spanish, supporting Céspedes, freeing his slaves in 1868, selling his property to raise funds for the Cuban Army of independence. In 1871 he went to the United States to raise money for the war effort, but died completely destitute in New York in 1877. The statue is flanked by Retablo de los Héroes, Independence Heroes.
