Norfolk Island, a small island in the Pacific Ocean located between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia is part of the Commonwealth of Australia, but has had self-government since 1979. On 17 January 1980 it adopted a distinctive flag of two vertical green panels separated by a slightly wider white panel, upon which is a representation of the evergreen Norfolk Island pine tree, a symbol of the island.
