The flag of the Meriam Mer people of Murray Island has three vertical stripes. Red symbolises the bloody past; white stands for the ''Coming of the Light'', the Gospel that swept away the old customs; black is the colour of the people. In the red stripe is a leaf, symbol of peace, placed on a white disk. It is surrounded by eight six-pointed stars, representing the eight tribes of Murray Island.
