Queensland, 1876

Queensland, 1876

The first flag of Queensland, in 1870, was a British Blue Ensign defaced with a profile portrait of Queen Victoria after whom the colony was named, but as the reproduction of the queen's head was too difficult to be done satisfactorily, it was recommended on 15 March 1876 that a new badge should be adopted: a light blue Maltese cross with an Imperial Crown in the centre, all on a white disc. The Queensland flag has remained the same since then, save for the design of the Royal Crown; it was last altered in 1953 after Queen Elizabeth II adopted the St. Edward's Crown upon her Coronation in 1952.
