Albanian Kingdom, 1939

Albanian Kingdom, 1939

On 7 April 1939 Italian forces landed in Albania and took control of the country. King Zogu I was deposed and on 13 April the Italian king, Vittorio Emmanuele III, accepted the crown of the country. A new red flag was adopted on 3 June 1939 with a shield containing the double-headed eagle, crowned by the Skanderbeg helmet and supported by two black fasces, connected above by two Savoy ribbons in black and below with a black scroll, with the motto of the House of Savoia, “FERT” (Foedere Et Religione Tenemur: Latin for “We are held together by Pact and Religion”).
