Democratic Republic of Afghanistan 1980

Democratic Republic of Afghanistan 1980

Late 1979 Soviet troops occupied the country and gave power from the “Khalq” to the “Parcham” faction, led by Babrak Karmal, on 27 December 1979. President Amin was killed, probably executed. The flag was changed, because the red flag had provoked much hostility in religious and feudal circles. In 21 April 1980 a new Afghan flag was adopted, resembling the old Republican flag but with equal stripes and a new emblem that included various previous elements.
