Republic of Afghanistan 1974

Republic of Afghanistan 1974

In 9 May 1974 a new republican flag was adopted. The same colours were used, but it now was a horizontal tricolour with a republican emblem at the upper hoist. The symbolism of the colours were: black for the obscure past, red for blood shed for independence, and green for prosperity from agriculture. It featured an eagle with a “mender” (a many tiered pulpit placed to the right of the mihrab in a mosque, from which addresses are delivered).
